What we do and don't do
A companion is there for company. That is all they are there for, and it is worth doing well.
What we do
- Companionship. Time with someone who has come to see them.
- Conversation. Talking, listening, sharing memories, reading aloud or playing a game.
- Outings. A walk, a coffee or a trip out, agreed with the care home first.
What we don't do
- Personal care. Washing, dressing, toileting or help with eating.
- Medication. Giving it, reminding about it or storing it.
- Nursing. Anything a nurse or carer is trained and registered to do.
The care home's own staff stay responsible for care. A companion never takes that over, and they will tell the home if they're worried about a resident.
Where we stand today
Booking visits isn't open yet, and nothing takes payment. This page says what companions will and won't do once it is.
